Things to Consider When Making Big Changes

Planning or making changes is something we all have to do and face at some point. Whether it is for professional or personal reasons, at some stage, we will be called upon to take action. We receive the ‘call’ and we know that our lives will never be the same again. Such times are often very challenging as we go through a process of weighing up what to do.  Whether it’s launching a new business idea, leaving a colleague or business partner or moving to another area, the points below are just some of the things to consider that will help to make the decision to ‘jump’ or not, and to support you once you have decided to ‘jump.’

1. What is the worst that can happen?
Be realistic here, and as specific as you can, about what you might lose if it all goes wrong. Are you still prepared to take the risk?  A good worst case scenario can help to make the first decision even more comfortable.

2. When you make this change, who will this impact?
Family, work colleagues, children, employees etc.

3. What will you need to have in place to feel good about this change?
What specific reserves, safety nets, etc?

4. What do I need to do or have in place before making any changes?
Are there any loose ends to tie up?  What things do you need to have ready and what people do you need to speak to or inform or consult?

5. Who can help you, and how?
Professional support is excellent and this is obviously a good time, but also look for support in your life form your partner, family, friends, and business colleagues, etc.

6. What will it cost me not to make this change?
Many people think only of the costs and risks of making a change.  It’s important to also consider what the costs or risks of not doing something might be.  If you didn’t take action and make the change, will you be able to let it go easily, and get on with your life, or will you keep looking back and asking ‘what if?’

7. How will you make this change work?
Look at the situation from a place where you have already decided to do it.  If you are going to do it, how will you make it work for you?  This is a very different conversation from asking yourself ‘If’ you can do it, which will lead to many negative responses and inevitably, a ‘no.’ Instead, ask yourself ‘How’ you can do it and create an opening for expanded thinking.

8. How long will the process of change take?
What are the various stages of the process, and how long will are you going to allow for each step.  Obviously you will need to be flexible about this, but some guidelines will be helpful to you.  Walk yourself through the decision in your mind and see how it will unfold.

9. What will you do when you feel scared or challenged?
Give yourself a break!  Most change involves a fear of losing something, even good changes, so be prepared for feeling afraid during the course of the process.
Think of who can support you in staying on track, and provide you with motivation and encouragement when you feel like giving up?

10. How can you celebrate your successes?
Along your journey, there will be times to celebrate the achievements you are making.  This is vital and will give you more motivation and encouragement for your success.
